Construction site of the week – Dismantling with a demolition robot

In Westenhellweg, part of the central shopping mile in Dortmund’s city center, special technology has been used since October 2023 to demolish a building built in 1956, which most recently housed the Mayersche bookstore.

Demolition robots offer several advantages

At lofty heights and in a very limited area, the Husqvarna DXR 305 demolition robot makes an efficient contribution to the demolition work. Our member company, Tepel GmbH, carries out the work with the remote-controlled demolition robot due to the inner city location, among other things, as it works emission-free thanks to electric operation, does not pose a problem for the statics due to its low weight and thus longer working times are possible than with manual demolition.

Both underground and above-ground stairwells up to the 8th floor as well as an internal stairwell will be dismantled. The technical building equipment, screed, brickwork, concrete and reinforced concrete as well as the girder cladding will then be dismantled.

Business operations without impairment

The central location and the immediate proximity to the ZARA clothing store, which is located on the left-hand side of the building on two floors, make special precautions necessary in order not to interfere with day-to-day business. When dismantling the stairwell in axis A, dust-reducing measures are taken so as not to contaminate the fashion store’s ventilation system.

The 2000 m3 of rubble, 260 t of mastic asphalt, 350 t of screed and 100 t of glass that will be produced by the time the demolition is complete will be transported to the processing plant using a Liebherr L 508 6 t wheel loader and a Cat Deltalader 299D3. The location makes it impossible to process the material on site.

A total of 15 skilled workers, a foreman, a site manager and a project manager will be working on the demolition on behalf of R&V Versicherung until July 2024. The site will then be redeveloped and used as rental space again.
