Construction site of the week – Basis for new industrial area

In Heinsberg, the foundation for a new industrial area has been laid since July 2022. In order for the future project to be realized, the old building structures of the industrial area have to be cleared. To this end, DA member company Ferraro Group first gutted and extensively remediated asbestos, mineral wool fiber and PCB in the buildings, which cover a total area of 140,000 m². The resulting hazardous waste was properly disposed of.

Species protection requirements due to bats, breeding birds and owls

The total area of the demolition site is approximately 50,000 m². The extensive factory buildings and their extensions date from 1958 to 2000 and are located within a developed industrial area with no residential buildings adjacent to them, so that no restrictions need to be observed in this regard. However, strict species protection requirements must be met. Bats, breeding birds and owls had settled in the buildings while they were empty.

On-site material processing and recycling

The demolition work is being carried out using a range of equipment, including a CAT 385 Longfront, four CAT 352 F, two CAT 330 F and a Sennebogen 800 E excavator. The structure consists mainly of mineral building materials and steel. The approx. 400,000 tons of concrete and construction waste are processed on site using a crushing plant from Kleemann and stored there for future construction projects. The majority of the materials will be recycled locally. In addition, clinker brick facades will be salvaged for reuse in new construction projects.

In addition to the dismantling, the contract includes the delivery, installation and grading of backfill material for surface leveling and the preparation of the area for future new construction projects.

By December 2024, 17 employees will still be working on the project. After that, the area can be handed over for the new development of the industrial site “Industriatech”. What the new business park might look like is shown in the last picture.
